The majority of the town was against having the Walmart. We could see the negative effects of the Walmart and knew it would be better for our town.

Walmart Co. got away with only a 20% property tax instead of the standard 25%. They marched into the town hall meeting and demanded ridiculous conditions we would have to meet for them to come to town.
It is a very bad idea to let Walmart build in our little town. The neighboring town wanted to get one anyways. They could have dealt with most of the negative things and if we need to go the Walmart it would be easier to drive to the next town than driving 2 hours.
This almost guarantees that no small businesses will be able to open up in Weserville. GIIERU's plans of helping small businesses grow larger to help the economy of Weserville won't be able to happen either. Poverty will go up and so will unemployment. Even if it creates jobs it will cancel out the opportunity for many many more.
If only the mayor had made it a majority vote from the citizens...

PINK FLAMINGOS
We won't stop
Very informative, I liked your pink flamingos (We won't stop). But it does stand to reason that even though it will kick out a couple of businesses, WalMart is also hiring alot and so unemployment won't really go up.
ReplyDeleteI understand your point but the amount of jobs that could be created by the smaller businesses (which will have a very hard time starting now) are being lost through this deal. The smaller businesses would also be local businesses and help Weserville grow economically.
DeleteI <3 the pink flamingos picture!
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you on many points. First I would like to say that Walmart will provide jobs and there are not that many people in Weserville to begin with that need jobs. The fact that there will be a big business in Weserville means that Walmart could attract more people and this could make other big businesses interested in coming to Weserville. This would continue to provide more and more jobs. Walmart could also decide to use the factory that is being built and rent it for their own purposes.
ReplyDeleteThere is still over 10% unemployment in Weserville. There are plenty of people who need jobs. And on your point about attracting more big businesses, do we want Weserville to become a commercialized industrial wasteland instead of the small beautiful town we love?
DeleteWalmart also gets all the products it needs from China and it would be cheaper for them not to rent GIIERU.
I agree completely. Walmart may bring employment, but the jobs they provide are part-time and low-paying. (Walmart says that 28 hours is full-time, but it isn't. It only says that so it can get away with not paying benefits for its workers.) By opening a Walmart, any chance that a small business might have had of surviving will be reduced to nearly zero. I wish the rest of the town council could have realized the danger of inviting in a company as powerful as Walmart. It is so large that it will just be able to push us around to get what it wants, especially if our economy comes to depend on it.
